Today is sad anniversary of the discovery of the body of Aldo Moro: it was May 9, 1978 when the body of the leader of the Christian Democrats was found hidden in a red Renault parked in Rome in via Caetani, emblematically close to both piazza del Gesù (where the national headquarters of the DC was) and via delle Botteghe Oscure (where the national headquarters of the Italian Communist Party was). A story, that of the kidnapping and murder of the former Prime Minister and promoter of the so-called historic compromise, which took place at the hands of the Red Brigades but which still leaves doubts about a complete truth.
“May 9 is the day when Aldo Moro was killed – this is how he intervened the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, commemorating the terrorist episode -. The barbarism of the Red Brigades then reached the apex of the aggression against the democratic state. The excruciating torture to which Moro was subjected will remain an incurable wound in our democratic history. Rejected the terrorist threat, today we feel even more the duty to free Moro and every other victim from a memory exclusively linked to the criminal actions of their killers. In rediscovering the thought, action, teachings of Moro and many other righteous people who paid the price of their lives, we will also rediscover some roots that can be precious for facing the future”.
On the day of remembrance of the kidnapping and killing of the president of the Christian Democrats and the men of his escort, the brother of agent Raffaele Iozzino, Ciro, also spoke: “42 years have passed and it cannot be forgotten. It is still so today and it will always be so, because when he was here I felt safe and I know that he left us to protect a politician of those who no longer exist, and with him the principles of him who they would lead him to become an excellent President of the Republic. Thinking about it, this is the consolation that soothes a wound almost half a century deep”.
