The cinema of Paolo Sorrentino and the photography of Gianni Fiorito

Until 7 January 2018 in the Project Room of the Centro in via delle Rosine 18 in Turin, it is possible to visit "Chronicles from the set: the cinema of Paolo Sorrentino. Photographs by Gianni Fiorito”, curated by Maria Savarese, presents about forty photographs that tell the cinema of the Neapolitan Oscar winner.

"In his photographic research - comments the curator Maria Savarese - Gianni Fiorito is not satisfied with returning one or more images that are representative of the films, but from each of them he tries to draw a further vision that never comments on the one already given from the cinema. What he tries to do in his photography is to 'see beyond', thinking about the fundamental elements of the scene: the actor, the director, the troupe, the places. Photographing cinema is not simple: it is less frequent to find results that go beyond the limits of documentation to produce visions that carry meaning.
Fiorito's narration does not refer only to the 'behind the scenes', but with his camera, he narrates Sorrentino's cultured, syncopated cinema by putting in place the perennial struggle between the flowing narration and the interruption of time. And then there is the empathy with the director's professional 'baggage': his particular way of working on the set, the search for concentration, the right framing, continuous confrontation with the actors and the technical staff on stage, the control obsessive about every detail of the make-up, the clothes, the faces of each extra, the objects on stage, told in the manner of a photojournalist who is constantly present, but invisible and attentive, at the center of the set.”

Born in 1959, Gianni Fiorito has been a photojournalist since 1980 with particular attention to the complex Neapolitan reality, documenting, among other things, the Camorra phenomenon and widespread illegality, the social and urban reality of the suburbs, the abandonment of the contemporary city and the transformation of the urban landscape. In the eighties he collaborated as a photographer with Mario Martone's “Falso Movimento” theater group and the “Idra Duarte” artists' association. Since 1999 he has dedicated himself more and more to the activity of film still photographer, carrying out a personal research on the use of the Italian territory in cinema. In this field we note the collaborations with Paolo Sorrentino, Luca Miniero, John Turturro, Antonio Capuano.
