The Austrian Chancellor Kurz has resigned: the corruption scandal has overwhelmed him

The People's Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation after the corruption scandal that engulfed him. His place should be taken on an interim basis by the foreign minister alexander schallenbergKurz himself announced. “It would be irresponsible to leave our country in chaos and stalemate, it would also be irresponsible to experiment with a four-party coalition that would depend on the graces of Herbert Kickl's Freiheitlichen. I put the country's interest ahead of mine, ”Kurz continued, announcing that he will remain in Parliament as group leader and leader of the Oevp popular party. “The allegations are false and I will prove it.” Kurz took note of the fact that the Greens, a party that supported the governing coalition, had taken "a clear position" against him.

The decision to leave has matured in the last few hours. Until Friday evening Kurz had made it known that he did not intend to leave. And to see no reason to give up his job: he had indeed declared himself "capable and willing to act", like his People's Party (OevP). The right-wing young chancellor had assured of wanting to do everything to ensure political stability in the country, after the controversy following the searches by anti-corruption investigators in his offices, in the headquarters of the OeVP, and of the Ministry of Finance. The latter's funds would be used to finance the publication of polls that responded to Kurz's interests.
