Ikea, nationwide strike on 11 July. It's the first time in Italy

It is an open clash between Ikea and the unions after the unilateral cancellation of the supplementary contract and the failure of a new summit between the parties. After an initial 8-hour mobilization in June, Filcams-Cgil called a national strike, the first in Italy, scheduled for July 11th.

Ikea, nationwide strike on 11 July. It's the first time in Italy

Ikea workers will cross arms for the first time in Italy on July 11th. The strike was announced by Filcams-Cgil: "For the first time in the Italian history of Ikea - reads the note - a national day of strike has been scheduled for 11 July".

At the basis of the Ikea workers' strike is the unilateral cancellation of the supplementary group contract and the failure of today's new meeting with the top management of the Swedish multinational from positions that are "irreconcilable" with the needs of the employees. A first strike of 8 working hours was made by Ikea workers after the news of the unilateral cancellation of the supplementary bargaining. But despite "the exceptional mobilization in June - the unions specify - the willingness of the unions and workers to continue the negotiations had not diminished: this had given hope for a less rigid attitude on the part of the Swedish multinational".

But the dialogue between Ikea and its employees has not led to any decisive result, but only to open confrontation. "The company stubbornly insists on wanting to get a hand in the workers' payrolls, transforming a fixed element of the salary into an element linked to variable indicators", said Giuliana Mesina, of the national Filcams CGIL secretariat.

“If this were not enough, they have once again proposed to penalize the workers, significantly reducing the percentage of the increase for work on Sundays and holidays, even claiming to be inspired by criteria of fairness, a value that we really struggle to see, if pursued with linear cuts to the detriment above all of the most fragile workers”, he concluded.

The Swedish multinational responds to the harsh attack by the trade unions: "The intransigence of the trade union does not contribute to a positive perspective of the confrontation started". And she recalls that she “sat down at the negotiating table to reiterate concrete proposals to guarantee all her collaborators a good job. Unfortunately, the decision to suspend the dialogue and call a national strike goes in the opposite direction to that of negotiation and discussion, which Ikea has always believed in, as it has always expressed its willingness to reach an agreement on the supplementary contract".
