Hong Kong: Occupy Central leaders surrender to police

The clashes of Hong Kong which took place in the night between Sunday and Monday between the police and demonstrators have left heavy aftermath within the protest movements which have been calling for political reforms from the central government for months. The three leaders of the democratic protest movement 'Occupy Central' they communicated that they will hand themselves over to the Hong Kong police urging the students to free the occupied areas and "to take root deeply in society and transform the movement to extend the spirit of umbrella protest".

But the message of the three leaders has certainly not convinced the leader of the youth movement Scholarism, 18-year-old Joshua Wong, who announced last night the start of a hunger strike to ask for a meeting with the Hong Kong government to start negotiations on electoral reform.

This episode bears witness to the two different souls of the protest: on the one hand Occupy Central which considers non-violence one of the cardinal principles of the movement, on the other the more radical student groups in expressing their requests to the central government of the former British colony.
