Hera, the production of new pipes from recycled plastic

In Emilia-Romagna the first trials of the new strategy of the Herambiente group which produces pipes made from 70% recycled plastic. Sewers and electricity grids will be the test beds. When fully operational, for electricity grids alone, estimated CO2 savings of 126,6 tonnes per year

Hera, the production of new pipes from recycled plastic

From recycled plastic to the construction of a network of polyethylene pipes, this will be the new experimentation of the Hera group together with Aliplast - the group company specialized in the treatment and recycling of plastic.

The first construction site involves a kilometer of electricity grid in the areas of Modena and Imola. The second construction site, which will be launched in January, will involve two kilometers of sewage network in the municipality of Bellaria-Igea Marina in Rimini.

For the development of production and for laboratory tests, Hera made use of the skills of Idrotherm 2000, specialized in the construction of pipes for network services. Thus Hera obtained a low environmental impact multilayer polyethylene pipe, deriving at least 70% from recycled material.

Based on the average meters of new pipes laid by Hera during the year, the use of recycled plastic could guarantee an estimated CO2 saving – for the electricity grid alone – of 126,6 tonnes, equal to the annual emissions of 95 cars of medium engine capacity.

Alessandro Baroncini, CEO of Inrete, one of the Hera group companies, commented on the news: “We started with a gradual approach that could allow us to evaluate the safety, quality and efficiency of these new pipes. The first results are very positive and this makes us look to future developments with confidence, which could also concern, for example, the networks of the public lighting service. More generally, we believe it is important to make the most of the skills, resources and orientation towards innovation expressed by the Hera Group and by an excellence such as Aliplast, thus continuing, also in the creation of the many networks that support our services, to create value shared in the interest of the environment and all the communities served.”
