Hera: agreement with Cremonini for biomethane and compost

The partnership provides for the establishment of a NewCo with Inalca for the transformation of organic waste and agri-food waste into 100% renewable methane and compost - Investments allocated for 28 million euros

Hera: agreement with Cremonini for biomethane and compost

The Hera group, through its subsidiary Herambiente, has signed an agreement with Inalca (Cremonini Group), a company active in the production of meat and in the distribution of food products, which establishes the creation of a NewCo, called BIORG, for the purpose of produce biomethane and compost from the differentiated collection of organic and agri-food waste.

Also expected an investment of approximately 28 million euros, resources that will also be used to renovate a site owned by Herambiente in the Modena area, in Spilamberto, which will be used for the production of biomethane and will become operational by 2022.

“After the Sant'Agata Bolognese experience launched in 2018, Hera continues to focus on biomethane again, with the aim of producing it in 2024 as well as 15,5 million cubic meters per year, more than double the current amount.

“Natural gas will be obtained from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste from collection of the Hera group and from waste deriving from the manufacturing process of the agri-food industry, including the meat production process of Inalca, a company controlled by the Cremonini Group. The expected production, when fully operational, is 3,7 million cubic meters of biomethane per year, which will be introduced into the gas network and returned to the territory for use in motor vehicles”, underlines the company in a note.

According to Hera's estimates, the environmental benefits will be significant: every year the use of fossil fuels will be saved by approximately 3.000 TOE (tonnes of oil equivalent) and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by approximately 7.000 tonnes will be avoided.

"The Hera group has always been at the forefront of promoting environmental sustainability and the circular economy: all our projects go in this direction, while at the same time promoting innovation and growth of the company and the territories in which we operate - he says Andrew Ramonda, CEO of Herambiente – As regards the development of the biomethane supply chain in particular, the agreement with a partner of excellence such as Inalca represents for us a further step forward after the construction of the first plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese Italy by a multi-utility for the production of biomethane on an industrial scale".
