Health and climate: the European conference in Budapest from 5 to 7 July. New spending commitments for prevention?

The connections between the environment and health are increasingly frightening. The World Health Organization has defined the standards of assistance to people after having certitor 1,4 million deaths for air pollution. European doctors have been debating in their organizations to apply WHO standards, but the final decisions rest with politics. From the 5 to 7 July in Budapest the ministerial conference on the environment and health takes place. It is the seventh time that politicians and scientists have met again after launching the European Environment and Health Process (EHP). This time the comparison will be on the health dimensions caused by a "triple environmental crisis": climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution.

The impact of the pandemic on the environment

Il Covid has highlighted difficulties and problems of all kinds in every country; to be concrete, however, the recovery must take into account the ecological transition and its objectives. In other words you get sick also because you don't let's check the environment, polluting activities, toxic agriculture. From a scientific point of view, the pandemic has revealed "the extent of systemic failures in preventing, recognizing and addressing the root environmental causes of zoonotic diseases", say Italian doctors. The thesis according to which the virus that started from China has infected supervised populations is partial. From the point of view of prevention from epidemics and climatic phenomena it was one epochal defeat. Italy has counted more deaths in areas with high air pollution. From the conference, therefore, transdisciplinary interventions and hypotheses of partnerships should emerge in order to have a different picture.

Actions in the field must be feasible

European health expenditure exceeds 1 billion euro the year with systems that change from country to country. Every EU program has to deal with forms of total or partial welfare. While environmental threats will certainly not diminish, one good conclusion of the Budapest conference must look at least to 2030. The draft of final document circulated these days requires each government to be the state's interpreter health-environmental crisis creeping, to give new impetus to environmental policies and ecosystem degradation. 16 points/objective including climatic effects on the mental and psychological state of citizens. The systemic crisis triggered by Covid has upset millions of lives and the expenditure on psychotropic drugs in 2022 in Italy alone involved eight and a half million people between 18 and 84 years of age. The widespread phenomenon ofeco ansia, particularly among women. In order not to implode in pre-established schemes, the protagonists of the assembly in Hungary have only one opportunity: to make the indications that will emerge practicable. However, they must remember that the European health expenditure it is 8% of GDP. So it will be useful to know if and how it can grow in the general interest
