Pro-Russian hackers are targeting the main Italian institutional sites: banks and utilities are also affected

Italy, again below cyber attack. Today, numerous government, bank and utility sites were attacked by the pro-Russian hacker group NoName57(16). The institutional sites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and the Carabinieri ended up in the crosshairs of the criminals, as well as banks such as Bper and utility companies such as A2A. The attack was done in such a way as to make the sites unreachable (DDoS attack).

It seems to be one retaliation following visit by Giorgia Meloni, yesterday, Tuesday 21 February, in Ukraine.

Pro-Russian hackers attack Italy after Meloni's visit to Ukraine

La claim of the attack, which arrived in the morning on Russian propaganda Telegram channels, reads this message: “Italy will provide Ukraine with the sixth package of military assistance, which will include three types of air defense systems. As Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said during a press conference in Kiev, we are talking about the SAMP-T, Skyguard and Spike anti-tank systems. Today we will continue our fascinating journey through Russophobic Italy”.

NoName57(16) is among the most active Russian groups in the cyber warfare against Ukraine. The group was created in March 2022, shortly after the conflict broke out. During these months it has produced many attacks against critical infrastructures and government entities and in Ukraine and in allied countries. But it is the first time that this group has targeted our country. Generally, the attacks aimed at Italy had been carried out by the group killnet.

It is possible that the cyber attacks could be repeated in the next few days.
