Smartphone war: from Nexus to Pixel, Google challenges Apple

Google launches the mobile phone challenge and focuses on a new smartphone, Pixel, on the model of the closed system that made Apple's fortune.

Presented as "a new era" at an event in San Francisco, the Pixels differ from the Nexus smartphones that Google has been offering, without too much success, since 2010. Those were gradually created by different manufacturers, from LG to Huawei, while the new smartphones, although materially assembled by HTC, are the exclusive brainchild of Big G and bear the Google brand.

These are, explains Ansa, two smartphones, Pixel and Pixel XL of 5 and 5,5 inches, with high-end technological equipment (the price starts at $649) and a battery that promises up to 7 hours of battery life with 15 minutes of connection to the power outlet thanks to fast charging. However, what makes the difference is the software, and in particular the integrated Google Assistant, which draws from the "home" search engine and not only to answer user questions and requests.

Also important, in an era of visual bulimia, is the offer of unlimited space to store all the photos and videos taken by smartphones on Google's servers. But the software that comes with the camera is impressive and is designed to take the best pictures with minimal effort. There is also virtual reality, with smartphones that fit into the new microfibre DayDream View viewers, designed for comfortable wearing.

The virtual assistant, and the convenience of voice commands, aren't just in your pocket: they can also be placed at home, in the form of a 'stylish' and colorful cylinder to put in the living room. The novelty is called Google Home and is very similar to Amazon's 'Echo': a speaker that answers questions, even in 'conversation' mode, and plays music. In the morning, just say hello to know instantly what you need, from the weather to the traffic; play the requested songs, project photos on the tv, turn on the tv to the desired channel, control the smart devices in the house, from blinds to lights. All thanks to voice commands and the emergence of artificial intelligence which, in the words of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, will be the key factor behind an increasingly natural and intelligent interaction between man and technology. Possibly Google-branded.
