Shipping giant's findings show biofuel blend can accelerate decarbonisation of sector with immediate effect on existing tonnage

d'Amico Group: the decarbonisation test confirms the reduction of C02 in maritime transport

More than positive results of the project decarbonization of the life cycle strategy. The results of tests conducted by the d'Amico Group have demonstrated that B30 biofuel blends are a solution that complies with the European regulation on the use of renewable fuels with a low carbon content in the maritime transport. The legislation will enter into force on 1 January 2025. This was announced by the d'Amico Group, ABS, LR FOBAS, MAN Energy Solutions, RINA, the Liberian Registry and Trafigura.

Launched in June 2021, the Joint Industry Project, intended to test the biofuel blend (B30) derived from renewable raw materials to fuel the d'Amico Group's LR1 product tanker, has shown encouraging results in terms of reducing CO2 emissions both relative than absolute.

Furthermore, tests have shown that, provided feedstock production can meet global demand, adding biofuel blend as a “drop in” to conventional marine fuels is a viable measure to reduce emissions per tonnage. existing.

Following these results - in advance of the entry into force of the legislation - the d'Amico Group has certified through the flag administration all its LR1 vessels so that they can operate permanently with the biofuel blend B30. The Group also intends to certify the entire fleet and, during 2022, test the biofuels B40 and B50 by adopting the same methodology.

The test followed the EU guidelines on fuels for calculating CO2 emissions. Following i results

• A 4,3% reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of fuel and a resulting CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator, gCO2/dwt-miles) of 3,99, a 3,5% improvement over use of fossil fuels with a very low sulfur content allowing the top energy classification "A" rating of ships until 2026;

• Confirmation by the flag administration and class that use of the B30 biofuel blend does not affect the Tier II certification of engines for NOx compliance. Both main engines and diesel generators were tested for their NOx emission compliance using the calculated data permitted by the NOx Technical Code;

• An effective reduction of CO2 emissions equal to 25,3% per ton of fuel, applying the Defra methodology.

The tests were conducted in the period between 19 June and 6 July 2021 on board the product tanker LR1 M/T Cielo di Rotterdam of the d'Amico Group. The B30 biofuel blend was supplied by TFG Marine, Trafigura's joint venture for marine fuel supply and procurement in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp region (Ara).
