The first edition of the Environmental Journalism Festival, organized by the Ministry of the Environment and ENEA, is scheduled from 6 to 8 March at the Maxxi in Rome.

Green New Deal: how to do it? 100 environmental speakers

How to talk about the green new deal and above all how to implement it concretely? This will be discussed in Rome from 6 to 8 March, in three days entirely dedicated to the theme of the environment and environmental information, on the occasion of the first edition of the Festival of environmental journalism. The meeting is being held at MAXXI on the initiative of the Ministry of the Environment and ENEA (National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) with ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) and FIMA (Federation Italian Environmental Media). Together with Minister Sergio Costa, more than 100 experts, communicators and journalists from 50 newspapers, radio, TV and the web will take part, discussing opportunities and critical issues, new tools and paths, through debates, TED-style interventions, journalistic services , dialogues and documentaries.

The Festival is divided into four sessions dedicated to: information to the general public, investigations, new media and the risk of fake news; climate and waste emergencies; the opportunities of the circular economy and the Green new deal; technological innovation, smart city, renewable sources and sustainable mobility. On Sunday, a large involvement of the sector associations is foreseen. Participation is free upon registration on the ENEA site. Journalists can register on the Sigef Platform (Third Party Courses) or by filling in the specific registration form on the ENEA website. The partecipation provides 4 training credits for each of the sessions of 6 and 7 March, up to a maximum of 16 credits.

“We believe that the turning point towards the Green New Deal – commented Environment Minister Costa, anticipating the themes of the three-day event – and the fight against climate change must pass through some main themes such as information and environmental education. Correct information must always be the basis of political decisions. For this reason we have decided to promote the Festival to which journalists from the sector, publishers, but also teachers and above all young people have been invited because we can only save the planet if we all lend a hand".

“Economic, environmental and social sustainability – he added Federico Testa, ENEA President – are at the heart of our research and innovation transfer activities to businesses, institutions and civil society. The Festival was born from the desire to support quality information on these strategic issues for the life and future of all of us, in the awareness of the fundamental role of the media in informing and, at the same time, 'training', growing and spreading a culture of the environment and sustainability to respond to the challenges we face”.

“Initiatives like the Friday For Future – instead said Stefano Laporta, ISPRA President – they have shown us that the sensitivity of young people, but I would say of all citizens, with respect to environmental issues is significantly increasing, this also thanks to the commitment of the Ministry of the Environment, ISPRA, of public research bodies and the National System for the Protection of the Environment in the dissemination of information through reporting, press releases, posts on social media, the result of careful technical-scientific work, carefully validated and certified, because we consider it our duty to make ourselves authoritative and credible from a scientific point of view, to be seen as a point of reference by citizens. The role of environmental journalism is fundamental because it is through the media that everyone can be reached, that prevention can be carried out, that change can be accompanied to affirm the green new deal that we all hope for".

A few days after the important initiative, the contribution of Arera, the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment, also arrived, which communicated that it had recovered, in 2019, over 8,5 million euros in favor of consumers with the Service of Conciliation. The Energy and Environment Consumer Desk has recently turned ten years old and to date have been, in all, approx 42 million euros recovered in favor of consumers (between Complaints, Special Procedures and the Conciliation Service) and more than 5 million calls received, with a daily average of 2.000, and approximately 700 problems managed. The level of performance deemed satisfactory by 96% of users.
