Green Deal "postponed" to the next European Parliament. A mortgage for the June elections

The Green Deal has caused divisions among all the political forces of the EU. A poll based on 30 points gave the outgoing Parliament a bad report. A shadow on the June elections

It is a Green Deal in check, because no political group has been fully coherent. The European parliamentarians leave after five years of mandate and bring with them disappointment (perhaps more ours) for the goals achieved. Yet in 2019 they said yes to a trillion euro plan to overcome epochal challenges. There turning there hasn't been any in energy and environmental policies and the result of a survey a few days ago confirms this. Politics has become divided and the changes to substantial points of the plan as it is underway, under the pressure of the tractors or the ultra-right, have accentuated criticism and hidden fears.

Il balance political and financial of the 8th monitoring is quite disappointing and will have its weight on the re-nomination of Ursula von der Leyen. In Italy there is discussion about the excellent candidacies of leaders who do not yet know how green they will declare themselves. The League has already said no to new green policies Antonio Tajani for Forza Italia he declared that sustainability yes, but not at any cost.

Net of the wars and the pandemic, Europe has not gained competitiveness with China and the USA. Now with one power, now with the other, the old continent is still unbalanced in raw materials, renewables, innovation, support for businesses.

Those who were supposed to be one of the strong points of Ursula von der Leyen's policy, the NGOs, carried out a survey among the parliamentary groups on 30 chapters of the green plan. Climate, energy and air quality were the main subjects of a bad report card given to the outgoing president.

Chiara Martinelli, director of Climate Action Network, with the new Parliament EU green policies could also go backwards. “It's time for European citizens to wake up to the real possibility of a Parliament full of prehistoric thinkers and to vote in favor of parties that guarantee the climate, we need it”.

Scores for everyone

Prehistoric thinkers and procrastinators: this is how the two categories of politicians interviewed are classified, defined on the basis of outcomes of the survey. Interviewees were explicit in acknowledging slips and votes against dozens of measures.

In the ranking of political groups, the Greens obtained the highest score in relation to the Green Deal directives. The worst votes were obtained by the Christian Democrats of the PPI and the far right. The Renew group was the most moderate with 56 points out of 100, the one with the greatest capacity for mediation on fundamental issues.

The results of the survey showed splits within all the groups which, a few weeks after the vote, become a shadow on all the lists. Is there a right wind blowing? It's not for sure. It is only clear that future MEPs will have to reopen unclosed files, whose list would be too long and on which China's interference continues for electric cars, technologies and raw materials

The final consideration is the fragmentation of political positions regarding the plan's spending, never seen since the post-war period. A mountain of money dropped into a very different scenario from the macro plan of five years ago. A mountain yet to climb.

  1. A real shame for a missed opportunity, even if it is true that there have been extremely unexpected events in recent years that have not helped
