Greece: over 50% of Syriza leadership against the agreement

A few hours after the vote in Parliament, the Greek newspaper Kathimerini reports that more than half of Syriza's management would be against Greece's agreement with creditors. However, it remains to be seen how many MPs from the premier's party will vote against the agreement and how many votes from outside the majority will come to Tsipras' aid

Greece: over 50% of Syriza leadership against the agreement

The majority of the leadership of the ruling Syriza party, meeting this morning in Athens, expressed their opposition to the agreement concluded over the weekend with the Eurogroup. This was reported by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini which reports on its online site that 109 representatives of Syriza out of a total of 201 have signed the final document which rejects the agreement signed by Tsipras at the Eurogroup. The final document states that the agreement "is the result of threats of immediate financial suffocation" and presents "humiliating conditions of control, destructive for the country and the population".

The signing of the document against the agreement by more than 50% of Syriza's leadership is certainly significant of the unease inside the premier's party, but its impact on tonight's vote will have to be verified. Rumors about the vote have already been circulating since yesterday: there should be between 30 and 40 Syriza dissidents. However, the other parties in the Greek parliament will come to Tsipras' aid, having already declared themselves in favor of the agreement.

The final vote, despite the party's stomach aches, shouldn't hang in the balance, but tomorrow Tsipras will probably find himself with a different majority from the one that emerged from the last elections. A cabinet reshuffle or the creation of a more centrally-oriented executive that will lead Athens towards the third bailout plan and the next elections, perhaps already in the autumn, is very likely.
