The decision was taken by the Hellenic Federation, after a meeting with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras who approved the decision until further notice: too much violence, first division stopped indefinitely.

Greece, Tsipras stops the football championship

It's not just the very difficult negotiations with the European Union that are making the new government of Alexis Tspiras hard. Even football gives the leader of the Greek left many headaches. But this time the example comes from Athens: in the face of the recent riots recorded (for the umpteenth time) in the derby between Olimpiacos and Panathinaikos, Tsipras has decided to stop the Super League championship indefinitely, i.e. the top Greek division.

The national football federation, in agreement with the government, has in fact decided to stem the rampant violence of the last few weeks with the most striking gesture: suspending the championship: "There are no safety conditions to continue". It was the deputy sports minister Stavros Kontonis who asked the main bodies of Greek football to suspend all activities until there are specific commitments from all parties involved in the fight against violence and a new legislative framework.

Kontonis met Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras this morning who approved the decision until further notice, given the tensions that arose in two derbies on Sunday, between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos and between Larissa and Olympiakos Volou and the scenes witnessed during last Tuesday's Super League board meeting.
