Greece, to vote on September 20: Tsipras down but still ahead in the polls

They will be held on September 20th Early elections in Greece are imminent: the official Greek news agency ANA announced this. This is the third appointment with the polls for the Greeks in nine months after the January elections and the July referendum on the EU bailout plan. The decree convening the consultation was promulgated by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos: the new Parliament will therefore meet for the inaugural session on 1 October.

Meanwhile, according to a survey published by the left-leaning newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton, despite falling sharply, outgoing Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras' Syriza party still leads ahead of early elections. Syriza would have 23% (in January it was 36,34%), while the conservatives of New Democracy are 19,5% (27,8% in January). The undecided are 25,5%. Alexis Tsipras remains the most popular leader (41%), followed by Evangelos Meimarakis (34%), who assumed the interim leadership of New Democracy in July.

The survey just published, however, photographs one uncertain situation. With these numbers, even with the bonus of 50 deputies that in Greece belongs to the first party, Syriza risks not being able to govern alone. But Tsipras has ruled out being able to ally himself with the pro-European opposition parties: New Democracy, To Potami and Pasok. While his government ally, the conservative Independent Greeks (Anel) party of Panos Kammenos may not enter parliament: the poll assigns him 2%, below the minimum threshold of 3%.
