Greece, the response of the inspectors this week

Envoys from the EU, the IMF and the ECB are completing the talks in Athens. Budget and aid are under discussion. But the ok from Vienna and the Eurogroup is also needed for the funds. Going back to the drachma is "ridiculous" according to the governor of the Central Bank of Greece.

Greece, the response of the inspectors this week

For the troika it is almost mission accomplished. By the end of this week, inspectors from the EU, IMF and ECB should complete their shipment to Greece. In these hours the talks on the plan to consolidate the Greek budget in the medium term are going on. There is also discussion of the next tranche of international aid, essential to save the country from sovereign default. This is confirmed by sources close to the negotiations.

The governor of the Greek central bank branded the hypothesis of a return to the drachma as "improbable and ridiculous". Meanwhile, the "triumvirate" is evaluating whether or not the conditions exist for the payment of a fifth part of the aid (12 billion euros, out of a total program of 110 billion) at the end of this month.

The payment of the funds is subject to the outcome of the meeting between senior EU Treasury officials, underway in Vienna, and of a meeting of Eurogroup finance ministers, which could be brought forward with respect to the scheduled date of 20 June. The Austrian meeting should define the options for the second rescue package, which could also involve the private sector to some extent.
