Greece: new wave of strikes is coming against the austerity plan launched by the government

The latest austerity measures announced yesterday evening by the Greek government have unleashed a new wave of strikes that is about to hit the whole country. The main Greek trade unions, Adedy and Gsee, have already proclaimed general mobilization for 5 and 9 October. However, the protests have already begun today, with public transport stopped throughout the country and taxi drivers who have folded their arms to oppose the liberalization plan. Three-hour strike also for air traffic controllers, primary and secondary school teachers and state employees.

The measures launched yesterday by the government represent the latest attempt to access the 8 billion euro loan from the EU and the IMF. In fact, the country runs the risk of finding itself with empty state coffers as early as mid-October. Among the measures announced, there is a new cut on public pensions and salaries, the cancellation of numerous tax deductions and the redundancy of 30 public employees.
