Greece, unemployment almost doubled in one year (+46,6%)

The number of unemployed reached 21,8% in January, almost double the 14,8% recorded in the same month last year – On the other hand, unemployment among young people (50-15 years) exceeds 24% – In total Greeks looking for work are 1 million and 84 thousand, over 300 thousand more in one year.

Greece, unemployment almost doubled in one year (+46,6%)

Bad news keeps coming from Greece. In January, the unemployment rate reached 21,8%, a slight increase compared to 21,2% in December 2011, but almost doubled compared to 14,8% in January last year. As in all the countries most affected by the euro area, the most affected group is that of young people between 15 and 24 years. In fact, among young people the jobless rate reached 50,8%. This was reported by the Greek statistics agency, underlining that even the population that should be more integrated into the labor market, that between 35 and 44 years of age, records a worrying rate of unemployment: 17,9%. 

According to the Greek institute, the unemployed are 1 million and 84 thousand in January, a 3,2% increase compared to December 2011 but a +46,6% compared to the same month last year. Employed people in January also decreased in a parallel way to 3 million and 880 thousand, a 9,3% compared to the same month of 2011.
