“I want to launch a very urgent and sincere appeal for national and political unity in Greece”. The president of the European Commission said, Jose Manuel Barroso, calling on political leaders in Athens to back the rescue package agreed last week by euro zone leaders.
The Greek people could reject the agreement thanks to a refendum promoted by Prime Minister George Papandreou and approved last night by Parliament. “Without Greece's agreement to the program supported by the EU and the IMF – warns Barroso again – the conditions for Greek citizens will become much more painful, especially for the most vulnerable”.
