Greece: attack on former Prime Minister Papademos

Former Greek premier Loukas Papademos and his driver were injured in an explosion in the politician's car probably caused by an explosive device hidden in an envelope and detonated inside the vehicle.

Papademos, 69 years old, was transported to the Evangelismos hospital with wounds to his legs and abdomen but his life would not be in danger.

The blast occurred at 18:45 local time in Athens. In addition to Papademos, the driver and an escort officer were injured. The police - who have not confirmed that it was a parcel bomb - cordoned off the area.

An economist trained at MIT, Papademos, former vice president of the ECB, is currently a visiting professor at Harvard. He was Greece's 'technical' prime minister from 11 November 2011 to 16 May 2012 in the national unity government.
