Great MAXXI, the museum of the future takes off: investment of 42 million

37,5 million euros are on the way for the Grande MAXXI. The total cost of the investment will be 42 million, the difference will mainly be covered with partnerships. The project, presented in Rome by the president of the Museum of XXI Century Arts, Giovanna Melandri with a trio of ministers (Franceschini, Giovannini and Guerini) and the mayor of Rome Gualtieri, it marks the beginning of a new path, after the first 10 years of the Foundation's life. It revolves around three key words: sustainability, innovation, inclusion. The masterplan includes the expansion of the museum, the urban regeneration of the spaces, the decarbonisation of the building, the birth of a new research hub, an urban garden and much more.

Great MAXXI, it will be a Net Zero museum

Giovanna Melandri herself had anticipated the contours in December: “MAXXI will be a net zero and increasingly digital museum“, he said in an interview with FIRSTonline. The future "is a construction site, that of a museum that elaborates, experiments and innovates". And in the MAXXI construction site the decarbonization projects stand out, the research and innovation hub project, the recovery of the barracks in via Guido Reni with the support of the Municipality of Rome which finally seems to notice - unlike the previous Raggi council. Rome Capital, announced Roberto Gualtieri, "enters the MAXXI Foundation". In addition to a new equipped urban green area to be created through the recovery of the area located behind the museum.

After the first ten years of growth, "now is the time for a 'natural' and further evolution - says Melandri - in the name of urban regeneration, sustainability and the most advanced technologies, to confront ourselves with the 'new world'".

Grande MAXXI, a new sustainable building

The new MAXXI will arise from a series of integrated actions that it aims to carry forward in the coming years, with a horizon aimed at 2026 as regards the funds of the Pnrr. It will concern both the central building, designed by Zaha Hadid, and the area adjacent to the museum. Here are the main interventions:

  • MAXXI HUB: construction of a new sustainable and multifunctional building.
  • MAXXI GREEN: creation of an equipped green area, productive and usable by the public.
  • SUSTAINABLE MAXXI: energy conversion of the building by Zaha Hadid. Circular economy.
  • MAXXI ACCESSIBLE AND INTELLIGENT: removal of physical and sensory barriers and digital upgrade, creation of new technological deposits open to the public and transformation of existing ones.

Great MAXXI, how the funds will be spent

During the presentation, Melandri insisted a lot on the goal of carbon neutrality for the entire building. It will be obtained with an important architecturally integrated photovoltaic system, with photovoltaic glass and tiles. Off the gas and replacement of the boiler with efficient heat pump systems. The museum expects to self-produce 1/3 of its electricity needs. Enel, which has also been a partner of the museum for years, will provide LED lighting for the outdoor spaces. A real integrated energy community is also being planned with the Ministry of Defense for the neighboring barracks in via Reni.

Nothing would have been possible, Melandri underlined several times supported by the directors of the Museum, without the collaboration of the Mibact, the Infrastructure and Defense ministries and now also the Municipality of Rome which will enter the capital of the Foundation.

The entire project requires 42 million investment. Of this figure, the insured coverage amounts to 37,5 million: 15 million comes from the Strategic Plan for Major Cultural Heritage Projects (MiC); 2,5 million from investment line 1.2 of the PNRR pertaining to the MiC; 20 million from the MIMS Fund for infrastructural interventions for the conservation, maintenance, redevelopment, restoration and enhancement of cultural heritage and the spaces, including green spaces, instrumental to them.
