Government, today first confrontation Di Maio-Zingaretti: two obstacles

The first round is today at 14 pm: the parliamentary leaders of the Democratic Party and those of the 5 Star Movement officially meet for the first time, to try to put together an agreement and form a new majority.

Unthinkable just a few weeks ago, now the Giallorossi government is more than a hypothesis, but it is not yet reality. At the beginning of the meeting Di Maio and Zingaretti will not be physically present but the two spoke by telephone throughout the morning.

There are still some knots to untie, especially two: the cut in the number of parliamentarians, which the Democratic Party refuses to vote with this formula (according to the Dems, it should be included in a broader institutional reform); and the name of the new Prime Minister to be proposed to the Head of State.

There is little time: by Tuesday Sergio Mattarella wants an answer, otherwise it is not excluded that we will return to the polls, as Matteo Salvini's League continues to hope, which today certainly The Zingaretti-Di Maio agreement will "guferà".. first round of consultations it closed practically in vain, if not with a vague intention expressed by M5S and Pd at the Quirinale on the attempt at a new government: now an acceleration is needed.

It is indeed in the interest of both parties to avoid the polls, which would inexorably reward the League and the center-right, and at the same time it is within the prerogatives of the President of the Republic to try until the end to acknowledge a new majority in Parliament.

Also because the deadlines are tight: a very delicate maneuver must be launched by the autumn, which also includes the question of the VAT clauses, and this being the case, it will not be possible to go to elections - at best - before November 3rd.

The obstacles on the way to a full understanding (everyone would like to avoid a weak and short-lived government) between 5 Stars and Pd they are known but not even that many: it will be crucial to understand how the grillini will agree to question a flag provision such as the cut of parliamentarians and which name will be chosen for Palazzo Chigi.

Giuseppe Conte, returning from the late great impression in the Senate, however, seems out: will an agreement be found on a third name? The full premier at the moment sees the number 2 of the Constitutional Court, Marta Cartabia, in pole position. But these are only conjectures, also because the fact that Cartania comes from circles close to Communion and Liberation makes the more secular turn up their noses, who would prefer the former minister and president of Istat, Enrico Giovannini or the former president of Anac, Raffaele Cantone.
