Government, Mattarella accelerates: three solutions in sight

The President of the Republic wants to stir things up in a situation of serious international crisis and meditates on the three cards he has in hand to give Italy a government: a pre-appointment for the Northern League member Giorgetti, an exploratory assignment for the president of the Senate, Casellati, or the assignment to a super partes personality

Government, Mattarella accelerates: three solutions in sight

THEescalation of the international conflict in Syria urges the President of the Republic to speed up the search for a government after the vote of 4 March and after yesterday's consultations at the Quirinale of the political forces, which confirmed vetoes and counter-vetoes, with the daring polemic of Silvio Berlusconi, who crowned Matteo Salvini as leader of the centre-right but stole the show by reiterating the his niet to an agreement with Di Maio.

Berlusconi does not want a wedding with the Five Stars, Di Maio does not want agreements with Berlusconi, Salvini closes the doors to the Democratic Partybut then how do you get out of it?

After today's last consultations, the President Mattarella could decide to turn the crisis around policy by choosing one of the options that are currently on his table to form a government.

1. PRE-Assignment TO GIORGETTI

The first option provides a pre-assignment to the Northern League Giancarlo Giorgetti, Salvini's right arm but appreciated by all for his skills as a great mediator and for his institutional and moderate profile: the fact that Salvini himself surprisingly spared him the presidency of the special commission (entrusted to the other Northern League Molteni, d agreement with Di Maio) may be a good indication of the fact that Giorgetti is considered a good card to spend in the negotiations for the formation of the new government.

2. EXPLORATORY ASSIGNMENT TO CASELLATI

The second option in Mattarella's hands provides an exploratory assignment to the second state office and that is to the president of the Senate, Elisabetta Casellati, an iron Berlusconian but voted to the presidency of Palazzo Madama also by the Five Stars in order to be able to bring Roberto Fico to the presidency of Montecitorio.

3. ASSIGNMENT TO A SUPER PARTES PERSONALITY

The third hypothesis in the field is the most intriguing but not necessarily the most feasible and that is the assignment to a super partes personality (a former president of the Constitutional Court?) that gives Italy a government in a moment of serious international tension without waiting for the regional elections in Friuli and Molise. Such a hypothesis should receive the votes in Parliament of both the center-right and the Five Stars but it could induce also the Democratic Party and perhaps Matteo Renzi himself to enter the scene with a more flexible parliamentary attitude than the simple opposition.

The next few hours or the upcoming weekend could push the Head of State to break the delay.
