After an unusually long meeting, which lasted almost two hours, the president Sergio Mattarella gave the expected task to Professor Giuseppe Conte to try to form the new government: the latter, as usual, accepted with reserve. He will first have to agree on a team of ministers to submit to the Head of State (the round of consultations starts immediately, tomorrow morning at 8), and then receive the trust of the two Chambers. Leaving the conversation, Conte made a four-minute speech in front of journalists, expressing on the one hand total loyalty to the program agreed and shared by the majority who suggested him as prime minister, adding emphatic expressions such as "I will be the defense attorney of the Italian people", on the other hand, however, following what was probably recommended by Mattarella, confirming "Italy's European and international position".
“The program – declared the prime minister in charge – will be based on the agreements between the majority political forces. We spoke with the president about the demanding and delicate phase we are experiencing and the challenges that await us. And I am aware of the confirmation of Italy's European and international position. The government will have to grapple with the ongoing negotiations immediately, from the European budget to the right of asylum to the completion of the banking union. It is my intention to fully engage the Executive on this ground by building appropriate alliances and working so that the operation protects and reflects national interests. The country rightly awaits the birth of an Executive and awaits answers. It will be the government of change”.

In the coming days, therefore, barring surprises, the new M5S-Lega government should be born, with a team of ministers still being defined but which should respect the forecasts of the last few hours: the candidacy of Professor Paolo Savona at the 'Economy, for which both the 5 Star Movement and - above all - the League insist. Alternatively, Giorgetti of the League is ready, already undersecretary in pectore. The two leaders would split like this: Matteo Salvini at the Viminale and Luigi Di Maio at the super ministry of welfare and economic development. In the last few hours there was also talk of an involvement of Roberto Maroni in the new executive, but the hypothesis no longer seems to be current.
