Government, Mattarella's poker to break the stalemate

By the middle of next week, the President of the Republic will take the field to resolve the political crisis either by entrusting a pre-assignment to Salvini or Di Maio or by entrusting an exploratory assignment to Casellati or Fico to arrive at the formation of a new government - If they all fail attempts, Mattarella could move towards a government of truce aiming to unfreeze the Democratic Party as well – VIDEO.

Government, Mattarella's poker to break the stalemate

Faced with the escalation of international tensions in Syria, which impose a clear and unambiguous position on Italy, and faced with the expectations of citizens 40 days after the elections of 4 March, one can no longer delay and a government must be created . After two unsuccessful consultations, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, is determined to take the field in the middle of next week with an initiative that will stir things up and bring the birth of a government closer without waiting for the regional elections at the end of the month. “We need to get out of the stalemate” he said yesterday in no uncertain terms at the end of the second round of consultations.

On his table, the Head of State has mainly two options for four candidates: either a pre-appointment that would go to one of the two leaders who came out semi-winners from the polls, namely the Northern League Matteo Salvini and the pentastellato Luigi Di Maio, or an assignment exploratory for the president of the Senate, Elisabetta Casellati, or the president of the Chamber, Roberto Fico.

They are all difficult roads: both Salvini and Di Maio, but more the former than the latter, are suspicious of the pre-appointment in the dark and it is not certain that they will accept it, because they fear getting burned without finding a parliamentary majority, unless the leader of the League, very irritated with Silvio Berlusconi for his sensational repudiation at the Quirinale of the dialogue tests with the Five Stars ("They are anti-democratic"), does not decide to cross the Rubicon and break with the leader of Forza Italia, as they continue to ask the Five Stars. But at present it is an unlikely scenario because it would deliver Salvini into the hands of Di Maio and the Five Stars.

It is more feasible to explore the second or third office of the state to unfreeze the situation in view of new developments that could lead to a completely different solution from the one imagined by Salvini and Di Maio up to now and always rejected by them up to now, i.e. at the tasking a third-party figure with a high institutional profile to create a "government of truce".

In the latter case, the position of the Democratic Party could also evolve on the indication of the former prime minister Matteo Renzi himself, not in the sense of entering a government with the League and M5S but of favoring the formation of an institutional or truce government.

The next few days will make it easier to understand the direction of the political crisis, but first the attempt by Salvini and Di Maio to find an agreement in extremis and to form a government must be fully consummated: if they fail, Mattarella will decide, who has already announced that, in any case, there will be no talk of new elections before next year
