Government, exploration in sight for Casellati

The President of the Republic is oriented today to entrust the President of the Senate with the exploratory task to verify whether a centre-right-Five Star government is possible – If it goes badly, the ball would pass to the Speaker of the Chamber, Fico, while other hypotheses are emerging ( institutional or truce government) with a super partes president like Sabino Cassese

Government, exploration in sight for Casellati

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, is contemplating today entrusting Elisabetta Casellati, president of the Senate and as such second state office, with the exploratory task to try to resolve the political crisis 44 days after the elections and evaluate whether it is possible to form a government after the stalemate caused by the vetoes and counter-vetoes of the main political forces.

Despite his clear political identity, strongly Berlusconian, the Casellati hypothesis is viewed favorably by both Matteo Salvini's League and Di Maio's Five Stars who feared that, instead of an exploratory assignment, the Head of State might be tempted to go to see the cards to the end and to entrust one of the two leaders with a real pre-assignment that would have risked immediately burning both Salvini and Di Maio.

Casellati's mandate, which from the outset resembles an impossible mission, must essentially verify whether or not the conditions exist to give life to a government formed by the political alignments that have garnered the greatest electoral consensus, i.e. by the centre-right coalition and the Cinque movement Stars.

As soon as she receives the mandate, the president of the Senate will immediately get to work and start consultations with the political forces which, in the intentions of the center-right and above all of the League, should even bypass the regional elections of Molise on 22 April and those of Friuli Venezia Giulia of April 29. But Casellati's poll, in the event it ascertains the impossibility of dropping the vetoes against Berlusconi and Forza Italia by the Five Stars and therefore the impossibility of giving birth to a centre-right-M5S government, could also serve to verify whether the Pd is or not willing to play its part in other hypotheses, such as in the case of a government of truce or an institutional government, for the presidency of which the super partes figure of the former constitutional judge Sabino Cassese is popping up, after a prior exploratory assignment to the President of the Pentastellato Chamber, Roberto Fico.

But the path of the crisis is still long and may reserve other surprises, even if the Quirinale has clearly made it known that before the European elections in spring 2019 it is unthinkable to dissolve the Chambers again.
