Government, consultations underway: key week opens

It's time to get serious. Once the Easter holidays are over, politics gets to work to form a government. Tomorrow, April 4, exactly one month before the elections, the consultations of the head of state, Sergio Mattarella, will officially begin. But the key day will be Thursday.

48 intense hours in which the President of the Republic will try to untie the knot of that skein leaking from the polls, meeting the leaders of the parties and the main political exponents in order to understand what are the spaces for maneuver and above all to understand what are the real possibilities of forming a new government given the "uncertain" numbers delivered by the polls.

In all likelihood, two days will not be enough to resolve such an intricate situation, but the road map provides that, on the basis of these meetings, Mattarella will decide whether togive an assignment – which may be full or exploratory – to one of the leaders. However, it cannot be excluded that the president - if the picture that will emerge from the first round is still uncertain - prefers to start a second round of discussions or wait for "more propitious times", taking a break in order to carry on further informal contacts.

In the meantime, the Quirinale has announced the calendar of meetings. It will start on March 4 with the presidents of the two chambers:

  • 10.30, the president of the Senate Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati,

  • 18.30 meeting with the Brothers of Italy led by the presidents of the groups, Rampelli and Bertacco, and by the leader of the party, Giorgia Meloni.

The day highlight however, it will be Thursday 5 March, when the leaders of the country's 4 main parties arrive at the Quirinale:
