Government to Alitalia: "First the plan, then the redundancies"

The Government has asked Alitalia to present in a short time a plan "shared by the shareholders, banks and creditor financial institutions" - the meeting with the trade unions was held on Wednesday.

Government to Alitalia: "First the plan, then the redundancies"

The meeting held at the Ministry of Economic Development between the top management of Alitalia, the number one of Mise, Carlo Calenda and the Minister of Infrastructures and Transport, Graziano Delrio, has just concluded.

Also present at the table were the new board member Gaetano Miccichè, representing the shareholder Intesa Sanpaolo, the general manager of Unicredit Gianni Papa, the CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, Giovanni Castellucci. "It was a very positive meeting," according to the airline's chief executive, Cramer Ball. "It was a useful and interesting meeting", said Transport Minister Graziano Delrio, specifying that "we reasoned clearly about the future" even if "we didn't see any plans".

The government's position was clarified in a note released a little while ago which reads that "The government has asked Alitalia to present within the next few weeks a detailed industrial plan shared by the shareholders, banks and creditor financial institutions". A feat that is not easy to achieve due to the existing frictions with the main lending banks. Unicredit and Entente in the lead.

As far as possible redundancies are concerned, an answer will only come later: "Any discussion on employment levels - underlines the note - will only be addressed later, once an industrial plan has been finalized in detail that defines the long-term project of the company and its relaunch”.

Based on the industrial plan, the number of redundancies should be equal to 1.640 units, but scaccording to some rumors, it could reach up to 4.000. On Wednesday 11 January, in the context of the meeting with the unions, tension is therefore expected to be very high also due to the company's choice to freeze contractual automatisms starting from 1 January. The road for the moment seems to be uphill.
