Government, Di Maio reopens. But Salvini: only for emergencies

The political leader of the M5S relaunches the negotiations for the Conte government, perhaps even bringing in FdI, but Salvini is not in it: "We are not at the market, let's go back to the vote as soon as possible, but not at the end of July" - However, the League does not excludes "emergency solutions". Government, Di Maio reopens. But Salvini: only for emergencies

The dust around the Italian political crisis has become so thick that not even the markets know which direction to take. For a few hours, the hypothesis of a political government took shape, but was later swept away by the League, which is now aiming for an "emergency solution" to bring the country to the vote. We return to talk of elections "as soon as possible", but at the same time we realize that an electoral session in the middle of summer would risk reducing turnout.

Among the players on the field, Luigi Di Maio is certainly the most eager to go to government. The political leader of the 5 Star Movement suddenly dismissed the impeachment rhetoric against the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to ask the League to reopen negotiations and aim for an executive led by Giuseppe Conte.

This time Giorgia Meloni could also be in the game, who has appealed to Mattarella to give the task either to the center-right or to the yellow-greens supported, this time, also by the Brothers of Italy.

Matteo Salvini, however, has every interest in returning to the polls, where his party would collect the electoral dividend accrued in recent months (according to the latest polls, the League would have risen from 17% on 4 March to 27%, now taking close to the 5 Stars). Therefore, the closure arrived by the center-right leader is not surprising: “Di Maio reopens? We are not at the market, to vote as soon as possible, even immediately, but not at the end of July ”, as requested by the Democratic Party.

According to Northern League sources, the position of Matteo Salvini's party in the last few hours on the government crisis is not to hinder quick solutions to deal with emergencies but "in any case give the Italians the floor back as soon as possible".

Meanwhile, this morning the Prime Minister in charge, Carlo Cottarelli, went to the Quirinale for an "informal" meeting with the Head of State. Then, without making any statements, he returned to work in the Chamber, where an office was made available to him.

From the entourage of the former Mr Spending Review they explain that “during the activity of the Prime Minister in charge of the formation of the new government, new possibilities for the birth of a political government emerged. This circumstance, even in the face of tensions on the markets, led him – in agreement with the President of the Republic – to wait for any developments”.
