Golf, Zach Johnson wins the Open

Zach Johnson, 39, of Iowa City, USA, won the 144th Open Championship after five days, 72 holes and four additional holes of playoff playoffs. Jordan Spieth, the new North American phenomenon, already winner of the first two majors of the year, instead stopped a few centimeters from success and history: on the 18th hole the blond Texan missed the putt for the birdie and was unable to reach the trio lead at -15, for the final play-off and to aspire to win the Grand Slam in a single season. Fourth place for him, 274 strokes in total, tied with Australian Jason Day, once again on the verge of success in a major tournament.

The last challenge of this Open suffered, because scourged by bad weather, saw protagonists Zach Johnson, the Australian Marc Leishman and the South African Louis Oosthuizen. The comparison was on four holes: 1, 2, 17,18. Johnson took the one-stroke lead early on and never let go. It was a deserved victory, earned one stroke after another, the second success in a major for the golfer, who already won a Masters in 2007.

Fortieth place for Francesco Molinari, the only Italian to have played over the weekend. Missed cut instead for Tiger Woods, who is preparing to end the worst season of his career. Woods loses blows, but not good humor. To those who ask him how he imagines himself in a few years, when the Open returns to St Andrews he replies: "With less hair, but with a better game than this, I hope". Of note, in this edition, the exceptional play of the amateurs: five shot under par and the North American Jordan Niebrugge won the amateur classification, with -11. However, the most followed and loved was the Irishman Paul Danne, 22 years old, who after three rounds was even at the top of the rankings and who played the last 18 holes in the last team, with Oosthuizen. He pity for the final round in 78 strokes.
