Golf, Italian Open: Hatton wins a stellar edition

The 26-year-old Englishman takes victory on the last hole. Third victory in the European Tour. The Italians did well: Molinari sixth and idol of the public, the revelation Nino Bertasio tenth. Record numbers for the edition held at the Milano Golf Club in Monza: 60 spectators could have been reached

Englishman Tyrrel Hatton wins the Italian Open and repeats last week's success when he prevailed in the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Scotland.

Sesto Francesco Molinari who, unfortunately, does not find the right intonation in the fourth lap to close with a high note and confirm himself on the podium, after the success of 2016. In any case, the Turinese remains one of the great protagonists of the race, a champion who , with his calm and his talent, manages to be loved and followed by audiences from all over the world. Nino Bertasio, 29 years old, was also very good, grabbing a top ten in the final and thus guaranteeing himself the card for the European Tour in 2018.

However, the real winner of this beautiful edition of the Italian Open is Italian golf, as demonstrated by the thousands of people who followed the event. The numbers are difficult to pin down, but attendance may have reached a record 60 overall.

If the aim of the Federation, with the Ryder Cup 2022 and the 11 millionaire Open editions, is to multiply practitioners over ten years, this seems like the right path. Even the governor of Lombardy Roberto Maroni realized this and, at the gala dinner on Friday, made himself available to host the Italian Open for another three years, with the same contribution paid for this edition: 500 EUR.

A respectable figure that raises the bar for other clubs and regions that want to ensure international visibility and a week of celebrations for athletes, the curious and families. For next year it seems that Cervia is also in the running.
