Grid operators turn to the EU: it is necessary to encourage the development of renewables

The association made up of the major European grid operators and environmental organizations today handed over to the European Commissioner for Energy, Guenther Oettinger, during the European grid conference ('European grid conference') in Brussels, the "Declaration of on the development of electricity grids and nature conservation in Europe”.

The document aims to "strengthen the coalition of stakeholders who support the expansion of electricity grids with the integration of renewables and to raise public awareness on this topic". It also “opens the way for cooperation on specific pilot projects to develop best practices and improve the delivery of grid development in line with nature conservation objectives as well as foster transparency and public acceptance”. The commitment of the operators consists in contributing to the achievement of the European objectives for the protection of nature, ensuring, for example, that the risks of impact from power lines are reduced to a minimum. At the same time, the NGOs argue that "the fundamental development of networks must be integrated with renewable sources".

For Terna, the signing of the agreements signed by the operators constitutes "an opportunity to enhance our experience in the sustainable development of the national electricity transmission grid - explains the managing director Flavio Cattaneo - we therefore express our satisfaction with the launch of a project of European importance which will see us busy in the coming years in view of the creation of an electricity 'Super grid'”.

Last October, the European Commission proposed a bill aimed at streamlining the procedures for the construction and financing of power lines that cross the various countries.
