Giro, Dumoulin tries but Froome triumphs: Sunday catwalk in Rome

Nothing doing for the Dutchman, winner of the 2017 edition: on the Matterhorn he tries to attack but the pink jersey remains firmly on Froome's shoulders, who thus becomes the first Briton to win the Giro.

Giro, Dumoulin tries but Froome triumphs: Sunday catwalk in Rome

After winning the Tour de France four times (and the Vuelta of Spain once), Chris Froome wins his first Giro d'Italia: after the feat in Friday's stage in Bardonecchia, the Englishman managed his 40 seconds ahead of Tom Dumoulin, even finishing in front of him at the finish of the penultimate stage of the Giro, which ends on Sunday at the Fori Imperiali in Rome. It is the first time in the more than XNUMX-year history of the pink race that a British cyclist has won. And it was also almost the first time that no Italian figured among the top five in the general standings: in the end Domenico Pozzovivo made it, redeeming Friday's opaque test and taking advantage of the French Pinot's crisis, finishing in fifth place .

Dumoulin however easily confirms his second position, after last year's triumph, while the third step of the podium is occupied by the Colombian Lopez Moreno, who resists the onslaught of the other South American, the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz. The stage with arrival on the Matterhorn, for the record, was won by the Basque Nieve Iturralde, who had been in a breakaway since the first kilometers with other non-ranking riders. The cyclamen jersey, that of the points classification, is firmly on the shoulders of the Italian Elia Viviani, winner of four stages in this Giro, while Froome also wins the blue one of the climbers, ahead of Giulio Ciccone
