Giro d'Italia at the start: Nibali is there, he will climb the legendary Zoncolan

The Giro d'Italia is back in spring. After the autumn edition of 2020 due to Covid, the most important cycling race in Italy and among the largest in the world returns to its natural location, in the middle of spring, in the month of May. It starts on Saturday 8 May from Turin, where the Giro hasn't been held since 2016 (and it hasn't been the starting point for 10 years), with a time trial of 8,6 km. After which the route will unfold in another 20 stages, for a total of almost 3.500 km to go (about 165 per stage, on average), which also become 7-8 thousand by adding the transfers, with a total altitude difference of 47.000 round meters. The pink race will be concentrated almost exclusively in the centre-north, bordering only the south: it will cycle in 13 regions, which are Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Trentino, Friuli, Marche, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, Molise, Umbria, Tuscany , Apulia, Abruzzo.

There are 6 arrivals in the mountains, in particular the highly anticipated and feared one on Monte Zoncolan, scheduled for Saturday 22 May. The climb will be tackled for the first time from the Sutrio side, the hardest ever: 14,1 kilometers at 8,9%, but the last stretch over 13% constantly with peaks reaching as high as 27%. Only two time trials: in addition to the inaugural one in Turin, the very last stage will also be a time trial, which from Senago leads to Milan, for 30,3 km which will decide the winner of the Giro. All the best teams are at the start, including the "Shark" Trek Vincent Nibali, who at the age of 36 is still trying to take on the pink jersey, despite the fact that the broken arm he sustained in April risked forcing him to forfeit. For now Nibali is there, but his conditions will have to be checked stage by stage and it is not certain that he will be competitive for the final victory. Above all, the Colombian will contend for it Egan Bernal, winner of the 2019 Tour, e Remo Evenepoel. Also in the running are Yates, Vlasov, Landa.
