International Coffee Day: Slow Food launches #savethecoffeebreak

The coffee break can become a moment of reflection and learning about what revolves around the world of coffee and its articulated supply chain. With this spirit, the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, together with the Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) and the International Coffee Organization (ICO), organized a free online masterclass on 1 October World Coffee Day entitled "From cup to bean ” which will take place from 10 to 11.30.

The event is hosted by the World Food Forum, the independent global network created by the Youth Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with the aim of creating a movement to transform our systems agribusiness.

In a sort of world tour between roasters, consumers and coffee producers, the campaign intends to explore the origins, types of production and sensory characteristics of the different coffees, showing the importance of preserving biodiversity and the risks due to the climate crisis we are facing living. The aim of the campaign is to underline the importance of dealing with coffee production and to stimulate people to become aware of its value chain, leading them to ask themselves “What kind of coffee am I drinking? Where does it come from?".

The Masterclass, held in English, will tell the story of the world of coffee through a backwards journey, which starts from the cup and reaches the bean. It is designed for the youngest and aims to raise awareness of the world of coffee, i.e. the meaning of every single cup that we consume every day for those who work along the supply chain. «We will celebrate International Coffee Day by committing ourselves to offer our support to the next generation of coffee farmers and to those who today have to recover from the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, helping them to build a more prosperous future for the sector» comments Emanuele Dughera, coordinator of the Slow Food Coffee Coalition.

The agenda for the day: Greetings from José Sette, executive director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO). Speeches by Emanuele Dughera, Slow Food Coffee Coalition coordinator, Rebecca Marcone, barista, roaster and sustainable development expert, Veronica Rossi, Institutional Relations and Sustainability Department of the Lavazza Group, Francesco Impallomeni, co-founder and head roaster of Nordic Roasting Co – Copenhagen , Michela Accerenzi, regional coordinator for Central America of the ETEA Foundation

Also on the same day, the Slow Food Coffee Coalition launches the #savethecoffeebreak campaign. «We want to emphasize that coffee is not just a drink that contains caffeine, but an agricultural product with a thousand nuances that is able to surprise us every day. Thanks to the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, we want to ensure that, on the one hand, the work of producers is recognized and, on the other, that consumers can make choices dictated by greater awareness» adds Dughera. «For many people, coffee is just a way to have more energy or to have a quick breakfast. We want to encourage them to reflect on the coffee they drink, find out where it comes from and who grows it. Through a journey around the world, we will understand what our coffee breaks mean for roasters, consumers and producers, underlining the importance of safeguarding biodiversity and fighting climate change.  The Slow Food Coffee Coalition is a network created by Slow Food in collaboration with the Lavazza Group. The goal of the network is to improve the relationship between farmers and consumers, strengthening the first - and most fragile - link in the chain and promoting a better understanding of coffee and its identity among those who buy it every day. Anyone can sign the manifesto, thus collaborating to ensure that they can enjoy a good, clean and fair product. The Slow Food Coffee Coalition is a global network that promotes environmental conservation, the defense of human and labor rights, product transparency and traceability, education and the right to pleasure, and has made these elements cornerstones of his project. Anyone can join the Slow Food Coffee Coalition: to listen, learn and share, to encourage the exchange of ideas and good practices or to propose new activities.
