Japan, Kan close to farewell

The prime minister could tender his long-awaited resignation today, but he has set a condition: before seeing him leave, his detractors in Parliament will have to approve a corrective budget maneuver and a law to issue new government bonds.

Japan, Kan close to farewell

Naoto Kan's adventure at the helm of Japan could end today. According to some rumors reported by the Kyodo news agency, the Japanese prime minister is on the verge of resigning. But on one condition: that some key bills are approved in Parliament. A corrective budget maneuver and a measure to issue new government bonds are at stake.

Kan has already survived a vote of no confidence in early June. To the hawks inside his party he had promised that he would soon abandon ship, but then he had stalled. An attitude that has somewhat irritated everyone between the majority and the opposition.
