Japan's energy boosts inflation

Japanese core consumer prices rose yoy for the fourth consecutive time in September on higher energy costs. This is good news for the Asian country, plagued by deflation. The consumer price index, which measures a basket of everyday goods excluding the volatile category of fresh produce, rose 0,7% last month, according to interior ministry data. The increase was in line with market expectations, following growth of 0,8% in August, the largest monthly increase since November 2008.

In September, electricity bills increased by 7,6% and car-related costs also increased due to oil prices.

Energy imports have surged in the country since the Fukushima nuclear disaster that forced authorities to shut down Japan's nuclear reactors. Furthermore, the depreciation of the yen since late last year has pushed up import costs.
