Ghosn, Renault-Nissan guru arrested for prison break

Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of the alliance Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, was arrested in Tokyo. The news was anticipated by Asahi Shinbun, the second Japanese daily for copies sold. Ghosn would failed to declare several hundred million yen (millions of euros) collected as company remuneration.

After a few hours it arrived confirmation from Nissan. The automaker has announced that it has discovered numerous acts of misconduct of Carlos Ghosn and of wanting to oust him from the office of president. Nissan specifies that his investigations have been going on for several months and have made it possible to highlight that Ghosn reported to the Tokyo Stock Exchange compensation lower than the actual amount. Furthermore, according to Nissan, Ghosn has committed "several other significant acts of misconduct, such as personal use of company assets". According to the Japanese newspaper, Yomiuri Ghosn has already been arrested.

The reaction of the financial markets was immediate: on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange the Nissan title falls to its peak by more than 7 percentage points, while in Paris Renault yields more than 2%.

Brazilian by birth, Ghosn is one of the dominus in the world car market. Sent by Renault SA to assume the role of chief operating officer of Nissan in 1999, the following year he became president of the Japanese company and the following year managing director. Since then, under his leadership, Nissan has been rescued from bankruptcy and relaunched to record sales.

In 2005 Ghosn also became president of Renault and in 2016 he piloted the alliance with Mitsubishi, engulfed in scandal for falsifying fuel efficiency data. In December of that same year, Ghosn was named president of Mitsubishi Motors.

It arrived last July the news of the global triumph: in the first half of 2018 the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi group sold more cars than Volkswagen group, undermining the German giant from the top of the world rankings.

Between January and June of this year, registrations reached 5,27 million, for a growth of 7% on an annual basis. The result is positive for all the brands of the group: from Renault to Nissan, from Mitsubishi to Dacia, up to the Russian Lada.
