Germany, Schulz opens to the Grand Coalition with Merkel

Reverse of the secretary of the SPD, Martin Schulz, who sets aside his prejudicial no to a new government with Merkel and, accepting the appeal of the President of the Republic Steinmeier, asks the members of the social democratic party to pronounce themselves through a referendum on a new edition of the Grand Coalition with CDU-CSU.

This is yesterday's political novelty that can finally give Germany a government, making Europe breathe a sigh of relief and relaunching Chancellor Angela Merkel, who however continues to remain silent. If this really ends up like this, the domestic and European political line of the German government will not change much, even if the social demands of the social democrats will probably have to find more space. However both Merkel and Schulz are weaker than before.

But the negotiations for the new government mark the great flop of the liberals who, stiffening on the austerity policy (they wanted Wolfang Schauble's finance minister's seat) and on the anti-migrant closures, remained with a handful of flies and reopened the way to social democratic rivals.

The German case could also lead the way in Italy, where to avoid ungovernability, Forza Italia and the Democratic Party could be pushed towards a government based on broad agreements.
