Germany, Spd reopens to Merkel: Schulz on the corner

The Grosse Koalition is back among the possible options, after the pressure from German President Steinmeier following the breakup of the Cdu with the CDS, the Greens, and the Social Democrats themselves for the "Jamaica" coalition

Germany, Spd reopens to Merkel: Schulz on the corner

The "Grosse Koalition" is no longer a mirage for Angela Merkel. Martin Schulz's SPD, which so far has refused to return to government with the chancellor's Christian Democrats, could reconsider and give external support to a new minority government led by the CDU-CSU. Or, and it would be sensational, to give in to the re-edition of the formula that marked his electoral ruin.

The negotiation is still in its infancy, but it seems credible. The temptation of the SPD can be explained by looking at the polls: after the historic defeat in the latest policies, the Social Democrats have no interest in immediately returning to the polls. It could only get worse, not to mention that the far right of Alternative for Germany would risk further strengthening.

“The SPD has the firm belief that we need to talk. The SPD will not deny itself to the talks”, said the secretary general Hubertus Heil, after the afternoon meeting at the Willy Brandt Haus in Berlin between Schulz and the President of the Republic Frank-Walter Steinmeier who is pushing for a solution that avoids the return in the elections following the breakdown of the negotiations for the "Jamaica" solution between the CDU, CDS, the Greens and the Social Democrats themselves

If in the end it really will be "Grosse Koalition", it is probable that the leaders of the SPD will ask for the resignation of the secretary of the party congress, scheduled for 7-9 December.
