Bulgarian percentages for German politicians. Peer Steinbrueck was yesterday crowned Social Democratic candidate for Chancellery with 93,45% of the vote. The SPD congress chose him to challenge Angela Merkel, who in turn was reconfirmed with 98% of the votes as leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU). Parliamentary elections will be held in Germany on 22 September next year.
Steinbrueck confirmed his party's willingness to ally with the Greens to lead the future government and said he was not available for a new edition of the "Grosse Koalition", a coalition with the Cdu. "Freedom, social justice, solidarity: these are the values that will guide our politics", chanted Steinbrueck in front of the 600 delegates gathered in Hanover.
The polls expect the Social Democrat leader to go all the way: the survey published yesterday in Bild am Sonntag reveals that only 41% of Germans consider him capable of leading the future executive, while 52% say they do not trust him.
