Germany, Scholz swore: he is chancellor and closes the Merkel era

Olaf Scholz sworn in the Bundestag and is the new chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. After 16 years and a real ovation to the woman who led it for so long, Germany is closing the era of the chancellorship of Angela Merkel, a pupil of Helmut Kohl and so far the undisputed leader of the German Christian Democrats (CDU).

Olaf Scholz, social democrat, is therefore the ninth chancellor since the war and since 1949 to be precise. The German Parliament elected him with 395 votes. The new Chancellor then moved on to the president Frank Walter Steinmeier to the castle of Bellevue where he received the appointment. At 63, Scholz becomes the fourth chancellor of the SPD after Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schroeder. Scholz will lead the so-called "Semaforo" coalition, made up of SPD, Greens and Liberals after winning the elections on 26 September. After 16 years in government, the Union (CDU-CSU) will go into opposition.

A long applause with ovation greeted Angela Merkel in the Bundestag, thus closing the chancellor's long exit path.

Scholz is expected again at the castle of Bellevue, the German Quirinal, this time with all his ministers. The handover to the chancellery is scheduled for 15pm.

The new German government will be divided into 16 ministries: seven entrusted to the social democrats, five to the ecologists and four to the liberal democrats. The Spd will lead the Interior and Defence, respectively with Nancy Faser e Christine Lambert, former holder of Justice in the outgoing federal government.

At the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs it is confirmed Hubertus Heil, while the Department of Health is assumed by Karl Lauterbach, head of the SPD for health policies. The construction is entrusted to Clara Geywitz, while the Minister of the Environment, Svenja Schulze, switch to Economic Cooperation and Development. The Undersecretary for Finance with responsibility for financial and economic issues as well as for international financial and monetary policy, Wolfgang Schmidt, a close confidant of Scholz, takes on the posts of Chief of Staff of the Federal Chancellery and Minister for Special Affairs.
