“We conceive the markets' attack on Italy as an attack on the entire euro area”. These are the words used by the German economy minister, Philipp Roesler, at the end of today's meeting with the Italian economic development minister, Paolo Romani. Roesler then reiterated that he was "absolutely against" the hypothesis of the Eurobonds to improve the fortunes of countries tormented by the debt crisis.
As for tonight's conference call between the Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, the French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Roesler did not go too far on the contents, specifying only that "a clear message will be sent to the Greek Government to carry forward the promised reforms on the economy”.
