Germany, Merkel defeated in Lower Saxony: SPD and Greens prevail for a seat

The chancellor's CDU remained the first party, obtaining 36% of the votes, but the coalition formed by the SPD (32,6%) and the Greens (13,7%) prevailed – now the majority in the Senate is at risk which supports the government.

Only one seat difference, but now the problems are starting for Angela Merkel. The coalition led by the German chancellor, made up of conservatives (CDU) and liberals (FDP), was narrowly defeated at the local elections in Lower Saxony. The victory of social democrats (SPD) and the Greens it brought about the end of the regional government of David McAllister, who had been strongly supported by Merkel in the electoral campaign. Now the majority that supports the government is at risk in the Senate.

According to the data reported by the public televisions Ard and Zdf, the CDU it remained the first party, obtaining 36% of the vote (down by 6,5 percentage points compared to 2008). L'pdf had 9,9% of the preferences, theSpd 32,6% (+2,3% on 2008), i Verdi 13,7%. SPD candidate Stephan Weil announced last night that he was ready to govern a majority that speaks with one voice: "As things stand now, this is my intention," he said.

The one in Lower Saxony was considered a key test for the chancellor, an indicator of the trend in view of the national legislative and regional elections in Bavaria, which will take place next September.
