Germany: retail sales down, but jobs up

In March in Germany, retail trade fell, marking a decrease of 0,7% in real terms and 0,6% in nominal terms compared to the previous month - Employed people, on the other hand, continue to grow, increasing by 376 thousand compared to the same period of the previous year.

Retail sales in Germany fall in March. There was a decrease of 0,7% in real terms and 0,6% in nominal terms compared to the previous month. The annual change was negative by 1,9% real and 1% nominal. These are data from the German Federal Statistical Office (DESTATIS).

While the retail trade decreases, the German employed continue to grow reaching 41,8 million units and marking an increase of 376 compared to the same period of the previous year. The percentage change in employed persons is equal to +0,9%, against the +0,8% recorded in the previous month.

If compared with the previous month, there was an increase in employed persons of 99 thousand units and therefore of 0,2%. The number of unemployed fell to 2,32 million units, with a decrease of approximately 53 thousand units compared to last year (-2,1%). The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stands at 5,1%.
