Germany, hacker attack against politicians: Merkel's data online

A hacking attack of enormous proportions in Germany. The personal data and documents of hundreds of German politicians have been published online. Practically all the politicians of the Bundestag - the German parliament - were involved with one exception: only the representatives of Alternative für Deutschland (AFD), the far-right party that won 12,64% of the votes in the last elections, were "spared" and 94 deputies. Celebrities from entertainment, journalism and music were also affected by the hacker attack.

Phone numbers, email addresses, ID cards, chat rooms, and credit card information posted on Twitter.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was also hacked. According to what has been revealed by the German press, among the data of the chancellor published online there would be her fax number, her e-mail address, and the correspondence sent by her and intended for her. It is not yet known if among the material that ended up on the web there would also be sensitive information or if the published data actually correspond to reality.

According to initial information, the hacker attack would have ended at the end of October 2018, but there is no news of its start. Those responsible are still unknown. The German Justice Minister, Katarina Barley, intervened on the matter defining the hack a "serious" attack on democracy. “The perpetrator of the attack – denounced the minister – wants to damage trust in our democracy and in our institutions. Criminals and those who support them should not be allowed to dictate the debate in our country."
