Geothermal energy: Tuscany takes the field

The Extraordinary Regional Council of Tuscany dedicated to geothermal energy will take place in Larderello on August 1st. In Larderello there are the most important plants in Italy for the production of this energy source. Tuscany, the Municipalities of the area and the operators carry on the battle for full industrial and strategic recognition of their resource. They are all determined to go all the way and overcome the obstacles that still exist at the legislative and public financial level.

The Mise says that the expected incentives will be included in the next Fer 2 decree, excluded from the Fer 1 decree for reasons of a technological nature. Cinquestelle Undersecretary Davide Crippa said he was committed to ensuring a more organic discipline for geothermal energy, promoting precisely the technological qualification and above all the environmental one. One of the most delicate points are, in fact, the emissions of hydrogen sulphide and mercury into the atmosphere. The convening of the regional assembly will push so that jobs, production and related industries are safeguarded in certain times. Ahead of August 1st, the meeting between the Enel Green Power Geothermal structure and over 40 companies in the sector was held at the Industrial Union of Pisa. A passage of a structured discussion between Enel and the territory that has been going on for some time. In the front row is the Co.Svi.G. (Consortium for the Development of Geothermal Areas) which represents the backbone of Tuscan geothermal energy. Enel has updated the data on overall activities whereby by 2020 the territorial repercussions will be over 70 million euros against a substantially stable annual expenditure to keep the plants going.

Enel Green Power also provided information on the status of tenders, on technological development in particular for the repowering of existing wells and the construction of new ones. The Ministry of Economic Development will somehow have to take all of this into account. The meeting of the Region in Lardarello is full of symbols and meanings, says the president of the Tuscan Assembly Eugenio Giani. The Council takes place in the places where 115 years ago, on July 4, 1904, the Marquis Piero Ginori Conti, with shower heads and a rudimentary dynamo, lit the first five electric bulbs. The history of Italian energy has brought geothermal energy into the clean sources and Tuscany has the advantage of having been able to exploit and enhance a resource which, up to Val Cecina, employs over 2000 operators. The game with the government is still completely open, above all because the companies in the sector are asking for a sort of equal dignity with the other renewable sources. It is true that the geothermal business is concentrated in just one region, but Enel is in the field as a company strongly committed to clean energy. Including geothermal energy.
