Gas, Prometeia: the Government is doing well, but that's not enough

PROMETEIA'S LATEST NEWSLETTER ON COMMODITY PRICES, EXCLUSIVELY FOR FIRSTONLINE – The separation between Eni and Snam Rete Gas is “a decisive step” in creating a competitive market, but other reforms are also needed to truly lower prices.

La separation between Eni and Snam established by the liberalization decree represents a "decisive step" towards the development of a competitive gas market in Italy. But, important as it is, this measure alone is not enough: a real drop in prices will only come with "the generation of a substantial surplus in Italy". Which means increasing internal production and giving the green light to new regasification terminals and pipelines. This is what emerges from the analysis of Promethea, independent study center, in his latest commodity price forecasting newsletter.

“If, in terms of global fundamentals, the prerequisites for a lowering of energy costs for households and businesses are all there – reads the report – for Italy a lot will depend precisely on the institutional choices that will be made in the coming months”.
