Gas, Eni strengthens in Indonesia

Eni takes a new, further step forward in Indonesia. The Italian group has announced the discovery of gas in the exploration prospect called Merakes, located in the East Sepinggan block, of which Eni is the operator with a 100% stake.

The discovery was made through the Merakes 1 well, which was drilled in a water depth of 1.372 meters and reached a total depth of 2.640 meters. The well - specifies an Eni press release - encountered a significant accumulation of gas in the clastic geological sequence of the Lower Pliocene age. The well passed through a column of hydrocarbons of 60 meters in excellent quality sands.

The oil group preliminarily estimates the potential of the Merakes discovery at approximately 36 billion cubic meters of gas in place and forecasts further potential. “This new discovery is important, as it strengthens our position as operators in Indonesia,” says CEO Claudio Descalzi. “GThanks to its proximity to the Jangkrik field, now under development, it will be able to supply additional volumes of gas – he continued – to the Bontang LNG plant. This result once again demonstrates the effectiveness of Eni's strategic approach to exploration, aimed at operating with high stakes in order to make the most of the discoveries".
